In one region in Japan, the proverb “laughter is the best medicine” is taking on a whole new meaning.
In the prefecture of Yamagata, the local administration has enacted a rule encouraging citizens to laugh at least once a day. To be honest. Not to be laughed at.
The research from Yamagata University School of Medicine, which shows that laughing has great health benefits, including lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and increasing longevity, is the source of inspiration for the first-ever ordinance. Moreover, laughter is thought to reduce stress and strengthen immunity.
The Yamagata people “will deepen their understanding of the beneficial health effects of laughter and make efforts to shape mental and physical health through means such as laughing once a day,” according to Firstpost, which describes the rules surrounding laughter.
Additionally, every eighth of the month is formally declared as “a day of laughter,” and businesses are encouraged to create happier environments—that is, a “environment filled with laughter.”
That being said, no one will be imprisoned for experiencing a bad day: the rule tries to encourage individuals to be more jovial rather than imposing laughing on them.
