For the first time in seven years, a boy with a rare skin condition can sleep with his eyes closed.

What must that have been like? Can you even attempt to imagine it?

Carter Bresee was born with a rare genetic skin condition called lamellar ichthyosis (LI), in which the body produces skin cells that do not properly separate from one another at the skin’s surface. Additionally, brown scales develop because the body does not shed skin quickly enough.

As a result of Fox News’ years-long coverage of his condition, Carter gained some support in Nevada, with many of them contributing to his medical expenses through a GoFundMe in May, when he was eligible for a potentially life-altering eyelid skin graft.

Additionally, it caused Carter’s eyelids to turn outward, making it impossible for him to close his eyes.

Carter’s mother, Shai, posted on the GoFundMe, which donated $46,000 toward the $8,000 cost of an oculoplastic surgery that would help the boy close his eyes, saying, “He cannot blink, he sleeps with his eyes open and is often experiencing lots of pain and discomfort because of this.”

After observing the amount of money the two had gotten, she told Fox 5 that she was unaware of the true sense of community they shared. “To feel so included is absolutely insane.”

Carter slept through the successful surgery that was performed in San Diego last month. What a sleeper he was.

OTHER RARE DISEASES: His son’s rare disease has no treatment, so his father goes to great lengths to create one for children everywhere.

He slept until today at lunchtime. Following the boy’s first night of being able to sleep with his eyes closed, Shai stated in a video interview, “He had the best night’s sleep.”

He was a “champ” during the occasionally excruciating procedure, she continued, maintaining his composure and requesting medication if it became too bad.
