Family Leaves Applebee’s Server a $500 Tip for His Act of Kindness

Kasey Simmons, a server at an Applebee’s in Texas, was left stunned after a family left him a $500 tip on what was possibly the cheapest bill ever: 37 cents for a flavored water. But the story behind the tip is where the real magic happened.

The family had specifically sought out Simmons that day. Just the day before, while shopping at a Kroger grocery store, he had noticed an older woman looking deeply sad. Not one to ignore someone in need, Simmons approached her and offered to pay for her groceries, which only came to $17. As he put it, “It’s not about the money—it’s about showing someone you care.”

What Simmons didn’t realize was that the woman was grieving the anniversary of her husband’s death. Her family, moved by his small but meaningful gesture, wanted to return the favor. Along with the $500 tip, they left a heartfelt note explaining how much his kindness meant to their mom on such a difficult day:

“On behalf of the Sullivan family, I want to thank you for being the person you are. On one of the most depressing days of the year (the three-year anniversary of my father’s death), you made my mother’s day wonderful. She’s been smiling since you did what you did.”

It’s a simple yet powerful reminder that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact—and sometimes, they come back to you in unexpected ways.
