Scientists have discovered that vampire bats’ metabolism has evolved to function differently from that of most animals, which allows them to succeed as runners.

A study demonstrated the unique energy metabolism of vampire bats by running them on a treadmill, which also revealed their remarkable speed.

Using its wings, one bat can be seen sprinting at speeds of up to 30 meters per minute inside a plastic box in the footage.

Among the few animal species capable of deftly navigating land, the vampire bat stands out.

It sneaks up on its slumbering prey—cows, pigs, and chickens—and slashes out with its beak-toothed fangs.

The Canadian study used 24 vampire bats that were brought in from Belize and were given enhanced cow’s blood.
