According to a groundbreaking study, a 2,000-year-old Egyptian cup was last used to serve a psychedelic drug concoction.
Davide Tanasi, a professor at the University of South Florida, utilized advanced chemical research on what is known as a Bes mug, or cups left behind by ancient Egyptians.

The mugs feature the head of Bes, an ancient Egyptian god or guardian demon revered for protection, fertility, medicinal treatment, and magical purification.
Historians have only speculated on the contents of the cups, with some assuming they were intended to store “sacred” water, wine, or beer, according to Branko van Oppen, curator of Greek and Roman art at the Tampa Museum of Art.
However, after scraping chemical and DNA analysis from the interior walls of a mug donated to the Tampa Museum of Art in 1984, Prof. Tanasi and his research team uncovered a cocktail of psychedelic chemicals, bodily fluids, and alcohol.
Based on his finds and written records revealing centuries-old traditions, he believes the combination was employed in a magical ceremony reenacting an Egyptian myth, most likely for conception.

He stated that the cocktail was flavored with honey, sesame seeds, pine nuts, liquorice, and grapes, all of which were regularly used to make the beverage look like blood.
“For the first time, we were able to identify all the chemical signatures of the components of the liquid concoction contained in the Tampa Museum of Art’s Bes mug, including the plants used by Egyptians, all of which have psychotropic and medicinal properties,” Prof. Tanasi told CNN.
“This research teaches us about magic rituals in the Greco-Roman period in Egypt,” Mr. Van Oppen stated.
“Egyptologists believe that people visited the so-called Bes Chambers at Saqqara when they wished to confirm a successful pregnancy because pregnancies in the ancient world were fraught with dangers,” the professor said.
“So, this combination of ingredients may have been used in a dream-vision-inducing magic ritual within the context of this dangerous period of childbirth.”
According to historians, the Bes Chambers at Saqqara were located near Giza’s Great Pyramids.
