An example of blind giving comes from France, where a wealthy Parisian bequeathed his €10 million inheritance to a little Normandy village that he had never been to before.

Roger Thiberville, a meteorologist and the heir to his parents’ vinting fortune, had only one thing in common with the 1,800-person town: its name.

According to Euro News, Thiberville is a classic Norman village with a 19th-century château but not much else that would make the news or be on the tourist route.

The local mayor referred to the endowment as “beyond imagination,” saying it would help pay off a €400K deficit on the municipal bank sheet before funding a number of initiatives, such as a synthetic football pitch and a bowling green.

“It’s a remarkable amount of money,” remarked 28-year mayor Guy Paris. It goes without saying that the sum is unimaginable. What we will do with it is still up in the air.

“We won’t use it all up. As we have always done with our municipal budget, we will handle this dowry responsibly and prudently,” he said on France Bleu radio.

Similar tales include this one: A stranger left an “out of this world” impact after leaving a $125,000 inheritance to neighbours.

50 km west of Paris, in the wine-growing region of Mantes-la-Jolie, Thiberville was born. Since his sister went away without leaving any heirs, the inheritance that his parents had initially meant for her passed to him.

In addition, he passed away without leaving any descendants, and all he asked was for his ashes and a nameplate to be placed in the local cemetery.

Additional recreation spaces at the nearby elementary school and a park shaded by PV solar panels are among the other initiatives planned with the funds.
