After using his 18-wheeler to assist in apprehending a shooter who had wounded a police officer, a New York lumber truck driver has been named a "highway hero."
In June 2023, Timonthy VanNostrand was on Interstate 88 getting ready to pass a state trooper who was coming towards a car he had just pulled over.
Owning and running his own lumber transport business in Northville, New York, VanNostrand is accustomed to risky employment, albeit the dangers he encounters don’t usually include firearms.
“It went by so quickly,” VanNostrand said to Fox News Digital. “The trooper kind of skipped sideways a little bit, but I wasn’t entirely sure what I saw at first.”
Then, VanNostrand recalls, he witnessed the driver pull out his revolver and begin shooting at the trooper through the rear window of his vehicle, which sparked a 12-minute experience during which “bullets were flying.”
VanNostrand then made sure the shooter was stopped by slamming his logging truck in front of his vehicle, cornering him against the side of the road. Fox didn’t say if the troopers and the backup that eventually showed there killed him, injured him, or took him into custody.
Later, VanNostrand received recognition as a “Highway Hero” from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the New York State Police.
Joe Burke, vice president of Goodyear North America Commercial Business, told Fox News Digital that the company honours the value of the commercial trucking sector, which according to American Trucking Associations transports 72.5% of the nation’s goods, through the Goodyear Highway Hero Award.
