After a recent storm, a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Alaska got its hands on some cash to help their deer.
A storm with gusts of over 80 mph tore through the Portage Valley on January 6, 2025, destroying the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center’s (AWCC) Sitka black-tailed deer shelter. Fortunately, none of the five resident deer were hurt, but the shelter was.
Many of Alaska’s large mammals are taken in by AWCC if they are discovered to be hurt or abandoned. Caribou, Sitka black tails, and even musk oxen are among their favourite companions, although the black tails are thought to be the friendliest locals.
The AWCC provided the image of the collapsing shelter.
According to executive director Sarah Howard, “they’re among the friendliest animals on the property, but they’re also very aware of their surroundings.”
The shelter was crucial for offering a safe refuge during inclement weather, a feeding area, and a warm, secure place for recuperation following medical operations when necessary. It also kept fur and feed dry throughout the year.
