In order to make sure he could accompany his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day, David Jones undertook an incredible journey despite the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene.

It was supposed to be a two-hour journey from South Carolina to Johnson City, Tennessee, but instead it took a strenuous 12.5 hours, filled with miles of walking, near-death experiences, and dangerous roads.
Jones anticipated a simple drive to his daughter Elizabeth Marquez’s wedding when he left the house. However, Jones had to take several diversions because of the strong storm debris that closed several roads along Interstate 26. When he eventually entered Tennessee around two in the morning, a state officer informed him that all of the roads ahead were inaccessible.
Even with the frightening news, Jones remained unfazed. “You must comprehend. I’m going to be there to walk my daughter down the aisle at her 11:00 a.m. wedding this morning,” he said. Jones started walking through pitch-black fields of debris, just the light from his cell phone to guide him.
There were several obstacles in his way, such as scaling six- to seven-foot-tall rubble mounds and, once, getting knee-deep in mud while a backhoe was operating perilously nearby. Jones remembered pleading vehemently while he was trying to break free. “I was immobile and covered in muck up to my knees. Sincerely, I believe that this might be it.
Jones struggled through more rubble until a truck, acting as a miracle, materialized after he managed to extricate himself and dig his misplaced shoe out of the dirt. He was driven the final eight kilometers to his destination by an old colleague.
David Jones showed up on time to lead his daughter down the aisle in spite of all the odds. Elizabeth wasn’t blind to the sentimental moment; she was struck by her father’s commitment.
Knowing that her father loves her so much that he would go through all of that to get to my wedding and be there on time, she remarked, “is so emotionally moving.”
