After drifting in a swimming ring for more than 80 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean, a lady who was pushed out to sea while swimming at a beach in Japan was rescued 36 hours later.
Following a call from her companion on Monday night stating that she had vanished while swimming near Shimoda, around 200 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, Japan’s coast guard began a search for the woman, who was only identified as a Chinese national in her 20s.
About 36 hours after she vanished, the woman was discovered by a cargo ship off the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula early on Wednesday, according to the coast guard.
As the woman bobbed up and down amid two-meter waves, the crew members who assisted in the rescue told TV Asahi that they yelled at her to keep going. The woman was later saved by two of the crew members who dove into the ocean, according to officials.
They say a Coast Guard chopper took her to the ground.
The woman was in good condition despite being somewhat dehydrated during her adventure, and she was only wearing a black one-piece swimsuit. According to the officials, she was examined at a neighboring hospital and then left.
Officials have since been informed that she observed herself drifting approximately 30 minutes into her swim. She attempted, but was unable, to return to the beach.
Despite the risks of heat stroke in the sun, hypothermia at night, or being struck by a ship in the dark, the coast guard claimed the woman was fortunate to have survived after drifting for over 80 kilometers.
